about

"Masterful use of space and pacing."
-Mike West, Washington Post

This is the debut album from the DC-based Abe Mamet Trio. The record was conceived for vinyl specifically - the A side is the first three tracks, the B side the last four. The music is completely acoustic; there are no overdubs, splices, or sounds added in post-production.

The album is heavily informed by Sound Awareness, a concept championed by the late Brother Ah (Robert Northern), another DC French horn player rooted in creative music. Brother Ah was a pioneer of the French horn, breaking the color barrier in countless Northeastern classical music institutions, notably the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, before going on to serve as a crucial part of the development of American jazz and creative forms of music as a member of The Gil Evans Orchestra, The Thelonious Monk Orchestra, The Sun Ra Arkestra, The Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, among other organizations. Brother Ah is also a central figure in DC's musical history, relocating to the city in 1986 and quickly becoming an avid community organizer and beloved teacher. He was also one of the earliest supporters of DC's WPFW radio station, for which he would go on to host a weekly radio show, "The Jazz Collectors," for over 20 years up until his death in 2020.

As Brother Ah told the Washington Post in 2017, Sound Awareness is an understanding that all forms of sound are valid expressions of music; beauty is a mindset, not a state of being. "Every entity on Earth is communicating through sound. Every animal, every bird, every insect. And if we hear it, we can be a part of it." This album attempts to use the concept of Sound Awareness to help amplify that beauty, and anchor ourselves (and the listener) in our own natural worlds, with eyes not on the horizon but turned focused within our own intimate realities.

Abe is indebted to many teachers and mentors: Barbara Grenoble and Peggy McReary, the Colorado Honor Band Association, Glenn Nitta, Keith Oxman, Ron Jolly, Manuel Collazo, Ryan Bañagale, Morris Kliphuis, Franz Sollner, and John Clark.
